VMFC Win GFSN Summer Tournament

28 May 2012

Village Manchester FC dominated the GFSN Tournament with two teams reaching the final and the third team narrowly losing the vase play-off final on penalties.

On a beautiful weekend in Glasgow, the Village boys received a warm welcome from our good friends at Saltire Thistle.

After one or two drinks were consumed on Friday night it was time to kick off the football on Saturday night, with more than a hint of a hangover on a few faces!

With three sides entered for the club, teams 1 and 2 made light work of their group stage opponents, going undefeated and finding the net regularly through Damien Mooney, Steve Clayton and Jordan Langford.

With the quarter finals and semi finals safely negotiated, it turned out to be an all VMFC final, which was certainly a hard-fought contest. With the score tied at 1-1 it looked as though the tournament would be decided on penalties. However, Mooney struck late on to make it 2-1 and seal the trophy for VMFC 1, which also featured Jez Ure, Pete Ransom, Jay McNaught, Matt Hall and Alex Wilson.

That wasn't the end of the action for our teams, though. After narrowly failing to make it through the quarter finals, VMFC 3 worked their way through the Vase section of the tournament and reached the final against Yorkshire. Leading 4-3 with just a minute to go, it looked like it would be a clean sweep for Village but a late equaliser sent the match to penalties, which the boys from the other side of the Pennines won 3-1.

Our thanks to everyone at Saltire for their efforts in putting on a weekend that everyone enjoyed. We face them and Mersey Marauders in our next domestic fixtures at Liverpool Pride in early August as we prepare for the start of the 2012/13 season.
