The second team had a highly frustrating afternoon as they couldn't convert a host of chances and ended up losing 2-0 to Gorton Reds.

 

Gorton took an early lead when a low finish from the right gave Matt no chance in goal. However it was Manchester who had by far the better of the chances up to the 85th minute when a second goal was conceded on the counter.

 

Danny, Tom and Alexis consistently ran the Gorton defence ragged but when it came to the finish it was a day when the ball just wouldn't go in the back of the net. Tom even won a penalty on 30 minutes but he now has a blemish on his fine spot kick record after his strike was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper.

 

A series of one-on-one opportunities gave VMFC further opportunities in the second half, the closest of which saw Tom hit the bar with a lob from 25 yards on the hour mark. The small man's frustration boiled over a few minutes later after reacting with some venom to the referee's offside decision, which resulted in a yellow card and being substituted so he could calm down from his little temper tantrum.

 

Danny and Alexis went agonisingly close before Gorton latched onto a misplaced pass in midfield and scored late on the counter attack to finish the game off.

 

This was one of the games Village had marked as one they could win in a league dominated by the top four sides. There was a huge level of disappointment that there wasn't at least a point to reward the team for their efforts and creativity but there are at least a number of positives that can be taken into the final few games of the season.
