VMFC kicked off 2013 with a superb 9-1 victory over Iraq FC but it was an afternoon of frustration for the Village 2nd team.

 

The day started with a re-match against Iraq who Manchester defeated 6-1 in the final game before the Christmas break. With almost a full-strength squad to choose from, manager Jason threw himself in for a rare start at centre back, while Alex and Goldsie returned to action after missing the previous match.

 

Things couldn't have started better as a long throw from Tom was prodded to goal by Ant Parkin and finished at the far post by James Wilson after five minutes. Just a couple of minutes later a corner from Goldsie dropped at the feet of Sam and he tapped the ball in from five yards to make it 2-0.

 

Iraq's inability to deal with set pieces continued and the third goal came when Tom's corner made its way to Jez at the far post. His shot was saved by the goalkeeper but landed right at the feet of James who scored his second.

 

The domination continued as Sam grabbed his second and then crossed for Alex to head home to give Village a 5-0 half-time lead.

 

With two players on a hat trick, Sam was the first to grab his third, calmly finishing after a good passing move from the team as VMFC went 6-0 up on 55 minutes. Goldsie hit what we will describe as a cross/shot for the seventh before the referee decided to throw some pity on the opposition, awarding them what looked to be a harsh handball against Jez in the area - a decision that the defender accepted with good grace. Jeremy was sent the wrong way and Iraq finally got themselves on the scoresheet at 7-1.

 

Wilson became the second player to grab a third goal, leaping in at the far post to head home a corner from Golds on 75 minutes. The final goal was scored by Danny - on as a substitute for Jason - who grabbed his first goal for the Village 1st team by shooting low from 12 yards on 85 minutes.

 

The final score of 9-1 did not flatter VMFC and, in truth, it could have been several more as Iraq's heads quickly dropped after their poor start. Tougher challenges await, not least with second-placed Miam Miam Celtic in two weeks time. However, Village should be proud of their recent form, which has seen them move up to mid-table with the best defensive record in the league.
