Village Manchester ended 2014 on a high as they defeated Cringle Athletic 9-3 at Wright Robinson.

 

After numerous games where improved performances were not rewarded with positive results, Village was delighted to get the win that lifts them off the bottom of the league.

 

Toland returned in goal after missing the previous week’s game and Connell joined McPherson in the centre of defence with West and Fish providing support out wide. Reece and Leech formed a strong partnership in the middle of the pitch with Cookson on the right wing and Fairbrother on the left. Holmes returned up front to partner Nelson. Bracken and Bridges were the substitutes.

 

Reece got the goal scoring underway when his perfectly placed shot from outside the box found the back of the net past the goalkeeper's despairing dive.

 

Connell got his first goal of the game and second of the season as he powerfully headed home a well delivered corner.

 

Captain Holmes started to take over the show however as he bagged a hat-trick before half time to give Village a 5-0 lead going into the break.

Village was urged not to let their performance drop and they started the second half well but were let down by some sloppiness throughout the half as Cringle started to look dangerous in attack. In fact, Cringle found the back of the net three times as they threatened a remarkable comeback. However, Village also were dangerous in attack and they added to their five from the first half with four more goals. 

 

Connell again got on the end of a dead ball situation to leave the goalkeeper helpless and Holmes got another hat-trick in this half to take his tally to six in one game - a double hat-trick, and according to our long standing chairman possibly the only person to have achieved this in club history!

 

It has been a tough season for the second team in a hard league and there have been a few setbacks for the team on the way to this first league victory of the season. However, it shows that the team are moving in the right direction and that the correct rewards do eventually come after all of their hard work.
