Village Manchester suffered a harsh 8-0 loss as they were well beaten by unbeaten New East Manchester.

 

Village lost 1-0 to the same opposition earlier in the season but, despite a strong looking squad, there were punished by ruthless passing and finishing by genuine league contenders who have yet to drop a point.

 

Toland returned in goal with Cole, McPherson and Fish joining West, who was captain in injured Holmes' absence, in defence. Feis-Bryce and Reece provided the protection in defensive central midfield with Khan, Baker and Golds aiming to help the lone man Leech up front. Ranson again took up his place on the bench as he continues his comeback and he was joined by Nelson and debutant Fernandez.

 

It was important for Village to keep things tight and frustrate the opposition but this was easier said than done. They held out for a while but will be disappointed as to how the first goal went in. From a corner, the big and powerful New East Manchester captain evaded his marker and got his head to the ball and saw his effort find the back of the net.

 

If the first goal was careless, the following goals were very unfortunate as the Village offside trap was let down by some questionable refereeing decisions. New East Manchester scored four more goals before half time but there were huge question marks over three of them as their attackers looked well offside. As it was, Village went into half time five down.

The scoreline was tough and harsh on Village but there was little they could do about it and what was needed was a strong performance in the second half that showed determination and eagerness to put good moves together and be competitive.

 

Village worked hard and the substitutes - Ranson, Nelson and Fernandez - came on to add some fresh energy.

 

Despite all their work, Village conceded another three goals as the opposition just proved to be too much.

 

The game ended with a disappointing result but it is obvious that the opposition look a good bet to be champions come the end of the season.

 

High points of the game were seeing West excelling in taking over the captaincy as he provided both direction and encouragement in equal amounts and the fact that Fernandez made his debut having joined the club over the summer. 

 

The Manchester City Central League is an extremely challenging league (in many ways!) and one thing the team has done consistently over the season is introduce new players into the squad. Some of these players have not played competitively in years, if at all, and games such as this will be character building and will stand them in good stead going forward - both in local and international football.
