29 June 2015

The club has always been active on the social scene and it is no different this month as we have got a packed programme of events coming up in July.

Things get going on Friday 10 July as the club embarks on a “poster run bar crawl”. This event involves players and representatives from the club meeting up at 8pm in Sackville Lounge and going to as many bars and gay businesses as possible to distribute posters and flyers about the club. The aim is to make more people aware that Manchester has a gay football team – and a pretty decent one at that! – and to recruit a few new players. For the club to evolve and improve it is important that we have regular new blood coming into the teams so, if you are interested, try and come along and make as many of your footy interested mates aware as possible as well!

The following Tuesday (14 July) sees the start of our fitness sessions – and we are delighted that long time player Paul Golds has offered to run these for us. Last year’s sessions were a really good way to start the season and with Golds’ knowledge and enthusiasm they promise to be just as good. The fitness sessions will be of great use to all of the players – after a few weeks off from training and with Stockholm and the new season on the horizon, it is essential that players have blown the cobwebs away and lose some of those summer beer garden pounds they gained!

On Thursday 16 July the football sessions start back and they will be conducted by our new coaches – James Wilson, Steven Holmes and Alex West. Each of these coaches is full of new ideas and ways to do things and it will be really good to see how the players flourish and benefit from their enthusiasm and organisation.

Fitness and football sessions carry on throughout the month on Tuesdays and Thursdays respectively.

Saturday 18 July sees the now annual RugBall game with the Spartans take place. This event has been running for the past two years and it is a great event where Manchester’s gay football and rugby teams come together to take each other on in games of touch rugby, football and drinking games. It's a great event where you get to see players taken out of their comfort zone, the sun generally shines and it is always a good laugh. Last year Village Manchester did the clean sweep so we are sure that the Spartans will be out for revenge this year! This is followed in the evening with everyone meeting up again for the usual Canal Street bar crawl.

The following weekend is a very busy one for Village as we take part in three different events. On Saturday 25 July we travel to Ormskirk to take on Mersey Marauders in a friendly at Edge Hill University with a 12.20pm kick off. The club is using the game as a warm up for Stockholm and the strong opposition – Mersey were in Division One of the GFSN League last season – will provide a great test for the outbound squad.

The following day we are taking part in two different events. In Salford we will be taking part in the Pink Picnic in Peel Park by having a stall. The event runs from 12pm-7pm and it will be a great chance for Village Manchester to reach out to new people and, hopefully, new players. We are also taking part in a 6-a-side tournament in Warrington as part of their Mardi Gras celebrations. This will be a good event to improve some player fitness and it will be nice to play different opposition in different surroundings.

So, as you can see, there is quite a lot going on – and quite a lot YOU can get involved in. If you would like to know more about these events then please do get in touch with us here or by speaking to us on Facebook.
