First team complete season with packed May

25 May 2016

The first team played five games in May as their Manchester Accountants League campaign came to an end.

With a host of games called off earlier in the season due to the weather, the club played two weekend games and an unprecedented three weekday games in 15 days.

Up first they faced Lawds at the Armitage in Fallowfield on Wednesday 4 May. The kick off was delayed as the opposition and referee turned up at the wrong venue but once the game got underway Village were the ones to take the game by the scruff of the neck. They were unable to build upon a good start though and ended up disappointingly losing the game 2-0.

Next up on Sunday 8 May the boys faced Miam Miam Celtic in Wythenshawe. A strong performance saw Nunes and Mbano find the back of the net and earn Village an important 2-0 win. The club faced the same opposition four days later at the Armitage but this time the result was different as the boys lost, despite Wilson’s goal, by a 2-1 score line.

The penultimate game of the season was at Hough End with PWC as the opposition. And it was a high scoring game with both teams hitting the net three times to earn a share of the spoils. Nunes again bagged a goal with Shaw and Fairbrother getting the others.

The season came to a conclusion with an away game against Maccabi 1 at Brooklands, Prestwich. Village travelled to north-east Manchester to face a team who needed two wins from their final two games to win the league. Village started well and with great intensity to match their opposition and it was unfortunate when they went behind to a great strike from outside the box. They did get some luck though when Maccabi missed from the spot following Storey’s foul. Village continued to play some good football but Maccabi's quality pulled them through and they scored two more to win the game 3-0.

This result turned out to be very important for Maccabi as they followed the victory up with a 2-1 win over Sporting Manchester in their final league game to clinch the championship. This followed their winning of the Manchester FA Sunday County Cup a few weeks earlier. From all at Village Manchester we would like to congratulate Maccabi on their success.

We now head towards the quieter summer period, but training continues every Thursday in June, both teams are invite to attend the GFSN Summer Tournament in Leicester, and the second team has a couple of friendlies arranged.
